Thomas desperate for success

SOMERSET will be looking to guarantee themselves a home semi-final in the CB40 by winning their next two games.

They face third placed Surrey on Sunday at Taunton and bottom side Worcestershire on Monday.

Currently the Cidermen are top of Group A and won their first eight games, but lost that 100% record when they slipped to a 17 run defeat courtesy of the Duckworth Lewis method in a rain affected game against Sussex on Sunday.

Vice-captain Alfonso Thomas, the leading wicket taker for the county in the CB40, said: “It was just a shame we had a slip up against Sussex but it was one of those games where it just didn’t go our way.

“We can probably just about get away with it now and it was a bit of a wake up call for us because we have maybe looked a bit complacent at times.”

Talking about the weekend games Thomas said: “These are huge games for us. We are all looking forward to our last three games in the CB40 and if we can win two of them then we should get ourselves a home semi-final which is what Marcus and all the boys want. It’ll also get the crowds in again.”

Thomas also said: “I am as desperate as any supporter in the ground to have some silverware this season so you can rest assured that we will be going all out to get over the final hurdle.

“Our supporters have been absolutely brilliant so we want to reward them by winning the CB40 and I think as a team we do realise that the best way to pay them back is to have some silverware to show this season.”

Somerset boosted their chances of lifting the County Championship for the first time in their history when they pulled off an impressive 219 run victory over Essex at Colchester last week to lift themselves to second place.

The Cidermen are currently in championship action at home against Durham and will be hoping to make it two wins in a row - if the weather permits enough play.
