Somerset wrap up victory over Essex

A magnificent 228 not out from Marcus Trescothick was the foundation upon which Somerset built this three day LV Championship win over Essex.

The Cidermen hit 215 all out in the first innings with James Hildreth top scoring on 84 before four wickets each for Alfonso Thomas and Charl Willoughby skittled the hosts for 151.

Somerset then reached 367-8 before declaring in a extraordinary second innings. Captan Trescothick opened the innings and stayed at the crease throughout, facing 230 balls for his 228 runs and hitting 30 boundaries. Hildreth hit 59 and Murali Kartik, batting at ten, reached 52 not out but no other somerset batsman scored more than ten.

Essex started their second innings on the morning of day three chasing a total of 431. With two days to take ten wickets to win the match Somerset could have been forgiven for relaxing but that was something they refused to do and needed just 45 overs to wrap up the win at Chelmsford.

This time it was Zander de Bruyn who set the example with the ball, claiming 4-23.

Somerset pick up 20 points and are now back in second place in the championship, four points behind leaders Notts, but having played a game more.
