Somerset have convincingly beaten Surrey at the Oval in the Clydesdale Bank Pro 40.

Having won the toss and deciding to bat Somerset put 303 runs on the board for the loss of just five wickets.

Skipper Marcus Trescothick was one of the five to fall, but not before hitting 12 fours in his 69 from 47 balls. His opening partner fared less well, Craig Kieswetter making just 26 before being caught out.

Zander de Bruyn came in as the fourth batsman and made 89 off 78 deliveries and cleared the huge Oval boundary twice. He shared a partnership worth 145 with James Hildreth, who hit 68, and when those two fell near to the end of the innings Pete Trego, 19no, and Jos Buttler, 10no, came in to hit some quick fire runs.

That score gave Somerset the upper hand going into the Surrey innings and Alfonso Thomas soon had the Browncaps reeling as he knocked over the wicket of opener Rory Hamilton-Brown for 4.

Trego and de Bruyn then took the next two wickets before Murali Kartik took centre stage and claimed 3-40 in an eight over spell.

Surrey were on 148-7 when 53 from Matt Spriegel gave them an outside chance of victory. However, Trego and de Bruyn then returned with the ball to wrap up the innings and leave Surrey all out for 209 with 35 overs used.

Mark Turner also claimed two wickets as he finished with 2-49 as Surrey were marooned 94 runs shy of their target.
