Kent deny Somerset championship win

Somerset failed to take ten wickets in two sessions of play to seal a chapionship win.

Marcus Trescothick reached 80, James Hildreth 48 and Zander de Bruyn 43 in the morning session as Somerset declared at lunch with a lead of 335.

Joe Denly and Sam North-East shared an opening stand of 67 but Murali Kartik, 5-57, soon had the visitors on 134-5. However, Geraint Jones the defended for over three hours against Kartik, reaching just 47 off 150 balls in a game saving batting performance.

Jones did eventually get trapped LBW by Kartik but that wasn't until the penultimate over of the day.

With the entire third day of play lost to rain Somerset were left with too much to do in one day, and managed only a winning draw.

Somerset will be encouraged by the turn that Kartik got out of the pitch and will hope that he can replicate his ten wicket match haul in their next home championship match against Notts next Thursday.

Before that though, there's the small matter of a Pro 40 match with Surrey and the T20 quarter-final to contend with.
