SOMERSET CCC: Club mourns loss of Eddie Lawrence

Somerset County Cricket Club is mourning the loss of Eddie Lawrence who passed away early today (March 16) at the age of 81.

A Yorkshire man by birth Eddie was totally involved with Somerset from the time that he arrived at Somerset from Kent, where he had also had a very active part in the County Club.

For a short period in the late 1980s Eddie Lawrence was the acting chief executive of Somerset CCC and was also a driving force in the Former Players Association, acting as chairman until he retired after which he took on the role of president.

In 1991 he was the co-ordinator of the Somerset Centenary Year Benefit, a job he undertook with his usual efficiency and enthusiasm.

For many years he was heavily involved with the Somerset Cricket Museum and from 2002 until his passing Eddie Lawrence was the Honorary Librarian and a very active Trustee. In 2006 he was also the acting curator for the Cricket Museum.

He was also the author of several publications, including the impressive Somerset CCC – Players Photographs and Statistics 1891-2002, all of which raised substantial and much needed funding for the Cricket Museum.

In 1997 Eddie Lawrence was made an Honorary Life Member of Somerset CCC in recognition of all that he had done for the County.

Former chairman and president of Somerset, Michael Hill, said: “Eddie was a great supporter of Somerset for many years following his move from Kent and we will always be grateful for what he did for the county.

“He served Somerset in many roles each one of which he carried out successfully, including the Former Players Association which he was heavily involved with and which after John Barnwell gave up, he became the mainstay and kept that organisation going.”

Mr Hill added: “Eddie Lawrence will be very sadly missed by everybody associated with Somerset County Cricket Club.”
