Royal London One-Day Cup - South Group

Somerset (338-3) beat Glamorgan (168 all out) by 170 runs

SOMERSET skipper Jim Allenby led by example with a superb century as his side completed their fourth win in as many Royal London One-Day Cup matches by thumping Glamorgan in Cardiff.

Allenby's 144 - his first hundred for the club in any format and one which came against his former club - was the top score in Somerset's imposing total of 338-3, with Dean Elgar continuing his fine form with 96 and James Hildreth contributing a 28-ball 58 at the end of the innings.

Batting first, Allenby and Steve Davies added 16 for the first wicket before the latter, having avoided a fourth successive duck, was trapped lbw by Marchant de Lange having made just four.

Peter Trego, the match-winner on Tuesday against Kent, clouted some early boundaries before a leading edge saw him caught and bowled by Hogan for 15, but that was about as good as it got for the hosts as Elgar and Allenby combined to great effect.

The pair put on 187 for the third wicket and looked set to record twin centuries before Elgar was caught behind off Timm van der Gugten for an excellent 96, a score which takes his total tournament runs to 350 in just four innings.

Somerset were well-placed to aim for 300, but James Hildreth slotted in immediately and set the side on their way to well beyond that landmark as both he and Allenby, who reached his hundred from 132 balls with a boundary off de Lange, rapidly accelerated in the death overs.

Between them, the experienced pair added 107 in 7.2 overs, as Allenby ended on 144 with 11 fours and six 6s, while Hildreth hit seven 4s and two 6s in his rapid 58.

De Lange took particular punishment for the hosts, going for 93 runs in his 10 overs as Somerset ended on 338-3.

Glamorgan's reply never really got going, with Somerset in the driving seat from the moment Craig Overton had Jacques Rudolph caught behind for two.

Fellow opening bowler Josh Davey then removed David Lloyd and Colin Ingram to leave the Welsh outfit struggling on 27/3 and, though William Bragg and 18-year-old Kiran Carlson staged a brief recovery, man of the moment Allenby ended their 55-run partnership when he had Bragg expertly stumped down the leg side by Davies.

Paul van Meekeren, in for the injured Lewis Gregory, clean bowled Aneurin Donald shortly afterwards, and when Tim Groenewald removed the dangerous Carlson for 63 the destination of the points was put beyond doubt.

Roelof van der Merwe (3-20) and Groenewald (2-41) then wrapped up the innings as the hosts were dismissed for 168 to leave Somerset sitting pretty at the top of the South Group ahead of Wednesday's visit of Hampshire.
