PETE Trego hit a career best 141 and claimed his 500th wicket in all formats of the game playing for Central Districts against Auckland in New Zealand earlier this week.

Trego, who is a firm favourite with Somerset supporters, has consistently been one of the leading English all-rounders since returning to his home club in 2006.

He passed 1,000 runs in one-day cricket in the summer, but struggled to take that form into the First Class game, so his 10th first class ton was very welcome.

The 32-year-old said: “It was a great feeling recording a century in the long form as it's been too long since my last. One of my main goals coming away was to get back on track with my four day batting as 2013 was disappointing.”

Jamie Overton, who enjoyed his best season so far with the Cidermen in 2013, has been selected in the 15 man England Lions squad for the tour of Sri Lanka in February and March.

The 19-year-old, who is a product of the Somerset Academy and is one of the hottest pace prospects in English cricket, has just spent most of the winter training at Loughborough and has just returned from a training camp in Portugal.

Left-arm spinner George Dockrell was very much to the fore in helping Ireland to lift the ICC Intercontinental Cup when they beat Afghanistan in Dubai earlier this week.

The 21-year-old sent down almost 60 overs in the match, claiming 3-52 in the first innings and following up with 3-58 to help Ireland win by 122 with a day to spare.

Meanwhile Somerset have strengthened their squad by signing top order batsman and occasional off spinner Johann Myburgh for 2014.

The 33-year-old, who was born in South Africa, has played much of his cricket in New Zealand and is vastly experienced with an impressive record in all formats of the game.

In First Class cricket Myburgh has scored over 5,500 runs and averages 43.37 which includes 13 centuries and a best of 203. He has also taken 31 wickets at 44.90. In List A he has scored 2,344 runs at 28.58, including a best of 112, and taken 24 wickets. In T20 he has scored 969 runs at 28.50 with a best of 88 and taken ten wickets.

Myburgh currently lives with his wife in Twickenham and has a had seasons with both Hampshire and Durham.

Director of Cricket Dave Nosworthy said: “Myburgh is a quality person and a quality professional cricketer. His track record speaks for itself and I have no doubt that his experience and expertise will add massive value and depth to the team.”

Somerset County Cricket Club will close for Christmas tomorrow (Friday) at 4pm and re-open on January 2.
