SOMERSET batsman Nick Compton has been left out of England's Ashes squad for the winter series in Australia.

Compton, 30, was not named in the 17-man squad announced today (September 23), with selectors opting to include three players uncapped at Test level.

It is the second Ashes squad Compton has missed out on this year.

Writing on Twitter, he said: "Congrats to all selected for Ashes.

"Disappointed to miss out. Honoured to have been apart of a successful year for England cricket #onwards."

Compton, who passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season during Somerset's crucial victory over Surrey earlier this month, was tipped in some quarters to be recalled for the upcoming Test series, which starts in Brisbane on November 21.

The right-hand batsman has played nine Test matches for England, scoring 479 runs at an average of 31.93 - including two consecutive 100s in New Zealand.

Compton has also hit two County Championship centuries for Somerset this term, averaging 46.79 from 11 matches.

He will be in the squad for Somerset's trip to Nottinghamshire tomorrow in their final County Championship game of the season.

On a positive note, teammates Jos Buttler and Jamie Overton were both named in the England Performance Programme (EPP) squad.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "The EPP provides an excellent opportunity for those players identified as having considerable talent to train together in an England environment throughout the winter and further develop as cricketers and this is an exciting young squad who have impressed in domestic cricket recently.

“The time spent at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough and Australia allows our coaches to work intensively with the players and assess their readiness to graduate to the full England side when the opportunity arises."
