SOMERSET have had two players reach 1,000 runs this season – Pete Trego and Nick Compton.

All-rounder Trego hit the four figure mark for the first time ever in one day cricket – matching a feat first achieved for the county by Piran Holloway – during his innings of 40 in the YB40 semi final match at Trent Bridge.

Compton notched up his 1,000 First Class run haul during the crucial victory over Surrey last week, a result that keeps the Cidermen’s hopes of remaining in the top division of the championship very much alive.

Trego scored 289 runs in the T20, while in the YB40 he amassed 745 runs at an average of 82.77 which included two centuries and five 50s.

He said: “Who would have thought it, but I have topped 1,000 runs in all one-day cricket this season, which is a very nice milestone to be able to tick off.

“Although the game it happened in didn’t go so well for us, when you are old and grey and looking back it’s nice to know you have done certain things in the game and 1,000 runs in a season is quite something.

“Its something that I didn’t think I would get to personally so I’m really proud of that achievement.”

“I made my debut for Somerset in 40 over cricket at Bath in 2000 so it’s nice that I am now putting big numbers onto the board for the club.

“I think the innings that gave me most pleasure would be the 140 I got against Yorkshire which won us the game when we were chasing a big total.”

Looking ahead, Trego added: “I hope that I can repeat this performance again next year and who knows hopefully we will make it through to one of the finals and win some silverware.”

Compton, who is Somerset’s leading run- scorer in red ball cricket, has notched up 1,004 runs at an average of 47.80 including two centuries and seven scores over 50.

He said: “It has been a tough year all round but I am a professional batsman and it’s my job. So to have reached that milestone, even though I had a difficult early season and was dropped by England, I think is quite an achievement.

“More important was for me to reach that milestone against Surrey when we needed a win. So to do it then and be able to celebrate with a beer that evening knowing that it had helped Somerset to victory was something special.

“It has been great to be able to contribute and support the club that has backed me so much since I first joined.”

The 30-year-old added: “I have been hitting the ball well all season. I scored runs against Australia and I have felt in good form.

“So now it would be nice to go on and finish the season well with another big score at Notts next week to help us to stay in this division, which is the priority.”
