EARLY starter Trevor Pitt drew out the name of Australian Professional Geoff Ogilvy as his partner in the Open Championship Pairs last Sunday and they combined to take first prize.

Pitt did most of the damage with his excellent net 63 at Brean while Ogilvy helped out with a three-under-par 67 in his final round of the Open Championship at Royal Lytham. Pitt wasn’t the lowest net score of the day, though, as that honour went to club chairman Graham Exton with a 62. His professional partner, Steve Alker, could only manage a 71 so Exton had to settle for the runners-up spot overall.

Captain-elect Brian Read had a best-of-the-day net 65 on his way to winning the Division 2 Monthly Medal. Martyn Cahill was the Division 3 winner on 68 while Barrie Tucker took the Division 1 Medal with 69. Shelia Rouse took the victory in the Ladies’ event.

Vince Ford will go forward to represent Brean Golf Club in the Regional Final of the County Golfer Challenge in a couple of weeks’ time. This was his reward for his round of 40 points in the qualifying event and, with another successful day in the next round, it may well see him taking a Brittany Ferry to the Grand Final in Northern Spain in September.

Runner-up to Ford was the in-form Graham Exton on 38 and Pete Barton was third on 37.

The Ladies contested their Secretary’s Shanker on Saturday, which is always a fun event as each player can only take two clubs and a putter with them.

Ladies Captain Gail Mason made light of the restrictions to record a very respectable 31 points and win ahead of Annie Williams on 30.

The club’s Avalon League Division 2 side completed their home games for the season when they faced Isle of Wedmore on Saturday. The home side’s golf was as bright as their final game clothing choices as they won comfortably 4-1 which briefly moved them back to the top of the League, although it was later discovered their nearest challengers, Long Sutton, had also won easily at home to overhaul them again at the summit.

Pete Douglas added more silverware to his growing collection as he took the Phil Fudge Trophy which was played in conjunction with the Seniors Monthly Medal. His net 65 was four clear of runner up Seniors Chairman Wally Pape and four clear of third placed man Roger Blackwell.

The Seniors will face an uphill battle to retain the overall trophy they compete annually for against Fosseway. Playing the away leg first, they ended up losing 4-2 and now have it all to do next month in the home leg.

Brean Professional David Haines continued his winning ways at the Upavon PGA Pro Am in Wiltshire last week. After not winning a Pro Am team event for a long time, he now has two successes in quick succession adding to his recent win at Broadstone. He also had a good day individually as he finished in a tie for fourth on his first visit to the course.
