AFTER a disappointing summer of sport, English fans finally had something to cheer at North Petherton on Saturday – when their team beat Wales 34-30 in a nail biting rugby league clash.

Patriotic fans from both sides turned out at North Petherton rugby club, the home of the Somerset Vikings rugby league team, for the Four Nations match between the England Lionhearts and Wales Dragonhearts.

England were desperate for a win after suffering a narrow 34-32 defeat against the Scotland Bravehearts in their opening fixture.

They got off to a good start thanks to a try from Tim Stevens and Nathan Walmsley converted. Seven minutes later Luke Watson set up Sam Montague to score in the corner for England’s second try.

Craig Fox pulled a try back for Wales to leave the tie poised 12-6 at half-time.

Robert Massom for England and then John Saniger for Wales both went under the posts in the second half and Wales then took the lead for the first time thanks to a try from Gareth Howells.

Further tries for both teams saw Wales maintain a two-point lead, before Sam Montague went over for a converted try in the dying seconds to seal victory for England.
