ON the hottest day of the year so far, the Somerset Vikings travelled to Puddletown PFC, the temporary home of the South Dorset Giants.
The Vikings dominated the first half of play, with the first try coming through Rugby League player Joe Knight.
Veterans Paul Clark and John Ferguson demonstrated the benefits of their experience but the absence of a regular kicker came through with none of their tries being converted.
The second half saw the Giants fighting hard to win their first match since entering the South West Conference.
Clark again got through the defence to score a try, which was this time converted by Knight, bur the Giants went on to score and, crucially convert, three tries.
The Vikings demonstrated good defensive play, with Nick Westaway, Clark, Chris Warner and Ferguson using their knowledge to support the more inexperienced players.
Westaway scored a final try for the Vikings with the Giants scoring another try and conversion within the dying minutes of the game to end it 28-22 in favour of the Giants.
On Saturday (May 29), Somerset Vikings player their first league game at their new home ground of Beggars Brook, North Petherton.
