North Petherton 1st XV 19, Wells 3

NORTH Petherton progressed to the second round of the Somerset Cup with a hard-fought victory over Wells at Beggars Brook on Saturday, writes Simon Freeman.

In a game dictated by strong defending, Petherton edged out their visitors who are having an impressive unbeaten season in their division.

In good conditions, both teams attacked freely only to be met by determined defenders who took control of the game with neither team being allowed to create momentum for any length of time.

The home side’s nerves were settled quickly when, from a lineout just inside the visitors’ half, back row Carl Brown anticipated and exploded on to a pass to score a fine individual try, which Harry Roberts converted.

Wells skilfully played themselves back into the game by taking the direct route, which tested the Petherton defence and the tackling prowess of Sam Williams, Damian Griffin and Toby Harris.

They frequently took the ball to Pethy five-yard line but the home side kept their shape or sometimes annoyed the official.

In the 20th minute, Petherton found some impetus after strong runs from Pete Dickens, James Taylor and Greg Charlton. Petherton utilised the distribution skills of Jacob Beleski to release the backs although Wells defence was solid throughout.
