Camborne 24, North Petherton 10

NORTH Petherton suffered only their second defeat of the season as they were beaten at Camborne on Saturday, writes Simon Freeman.

Harry Roberts’ penalty gave Pethy an early advantage but that would turn out to be the only highlight of the half for Pethy as Camborne got into their work nicely and began to dominate the game.

For the next ten minutes, Camborne applied constant pressure to the Pethy line and were unlucky not to score through their fullback who was ruled to have grounded the ball just short of the line.

Eventually, their tight game plan paid off as their hooker scored the opening try from a well-constructed maul.

In the 18th minute, scrum-half Jack Khola was yellow-carded for a shoulder charge on the Camborne winger.

This forced a reshuffle in the Pethy backline and, when Dominik Griffin was surprisingly sin-binned a few minutes later, it put real pressure on the Pethy defence.

Playing with both their scrum-half and fly-half off the field, Pethy showed great determination to hold Camborne out until both players returned to the field – with captain Sam Williams and James Taylor leading from the front on defence. Camborne soon crossed again, though, through their powerful second-row forward.

Camborne’s simple game plan was getting them in the right parts of the field to build a big lead and they hammered away at the Pethy line until their second row forward crossed again.

Camborne continued to strangle Pethy in the second half with clever tactical kicking and strong ball-carrying denying Pethy any chance to get the momentum going their way.

Almost the entire second half was played out in Pethy’s half of the field, and eventually the pressure told as the Camborne number 8 crossed after a clean break from their scrum-half.

With a few minutes to go, a Camborne mistake gave Pethy their first trip inside the Camborne 22 and, after putting together multiple phases, Chad Lowrie was able to power over beside the post. Roberts converted to reduce the margin to 24-10.

That would be the final score of the match as the final few minutes were played out in the middle of the field.
