SOMERSET hooker Sam Williams will take over the captaincy at North Petherton RFC for the 2013/14 season. He takes over from James Carter who has been in the role for the past two seasons.

Petherton finished third in South West 1 West last season and outgoing skipper Carter was pleased with his side’s progress and believes they can continue to improve under the leadership of Williams, he said: “I’ve been captain for two seasons now so we were just ready for a change. We want the club to keep moving forward and improve on last season. I think we exceeded all expectations in the first half of last season, but I think injuries really hurt us. We are always trying to be the best and if we can get promotion that would be great.”

Incoming skipper Williams is delighted to be taking on the role and hopes that he can take the team forward.

He said: “I’m really pleased and honoured to be taking over the captaincy.

James has been captain for the last few seasons and I’ve been pack leader, so I’ve just had to step up from there.”

Williams echoed former captain Carter’s aims for the coming season.

He said “Having spoken to a few of the boys, the target is definitely going to be promotion. We need to get some new faces at the club and get some depth to our squad. Our lack of depth really hurt us last season.”

North Petherton start the 2013/14 season at home to St. Austell on September 7.
