Bridgwater Mercury: Brean's new layout proves popular Brean's new layout proves popular

THE new course layout at Brean has been met with many positive responses from the members and visitors who have tackled it in its first week of opening.

Pete Dunn certainly had no problems with it as he won the Monthly Stableford with his best of the day 41 points taking the Division Two award in the process.

Chris Leaman ended as his nearest challenger in that Division after 39 points. Murray Parsons was the victor in the top flight but only after a countback on 39 with Jason Kidley and yet another close finish was served up in the Third Division.

Richard Broom's back nine haul in his round of 36 points just ousted Tony Groves' similar score from the top spot. Running in conjunction with the Stableford was the 'Home International' match.

Six members were selected to represent each of the four nations and it was the Scots who came out on top. Led superbly by Club Captain Stewart Garrett they totalled 180 points between their players to win by seven from England. Wales took third whilst the Irish brought up the rear and collected the wooden spoon.

The Avalon League Division Six side were the first team to host an inter club match on the new course and they hoped they would still have some home advantage. This certainly proved to be the case as they ran out winners by a comfortable 4-1 margin over their Wells counterparts to collect a healthy points total on the day.

The weather yet again disrupted a Seniors match as they travelled to Weston for the first of two quickfire encounters with their near neighbours.

With the first match only managing nine holes before the course became unplayable in the wet conditions it was decided between the two Captains that the result would be declared an honourable draw of three games each. They meet again this week in the return at Brean.
