Enmore Park Captain’s Charity Day a resounding success

1:00pm Sunday 8th August 2010

THE Enmore Park Captain’s Charity Day on July 31was a great success.

Captain Martyn Clapp handed over a cheque for £9,000 to Muscular Dystrophy (pictured) following several fundraising events culminating in a team Texas Scramble Event. The final donation is expected to be in excess of £10,000.

Enmore Park Seniors had a modest mid July period with a halved match at Bristol & Clifton when both teams scored 3½ points each, but a defeat at Wells spoiled the week.

The humid conditions on an otherwise fine day at the Clifton course led to some interesting scoring. John Newell and Ken Hunt were in sparkling form and won by the margin of 4&3, while John Patterson and Ian Stewart won the final hole to finish two up. The next three matches were evenly contested and half points were gained by Captain Roger Anniss playing with Keith Norcutt; Graham Marson with Keith Calvert and Graham Pain with John Clift.

Having halved at B&C, the team then moved to Wells on the next day where the home team was not in a very generous mood. Ray Hancock and Bob Burton put pressure on their opponents and won 5 holes in row to record a 3&2 victory, while Captain Roger Anniss and Chris Marshall won on the 18th green by 1 up. The half point was gained by Mike Sullivan with Max Jameson and these three pairings recorded 2 ½ points. However, Enmore Park Seniors could not match their Wells counterparts who scored 5 ½ points to win convincingly on the day.

The July programme finished with a well-earned halved match at Windwhistle. The weather conditions were good, the course was in fine order and the challenge was augmented by the new 3 holes that had been added since the seniors’ last visit a year ago. Enmore recorded 3 wins through Ray Hancock with Phil Wood (3&2); John Patterson with Roger Cross (3&1) and Tony Pomeroy with John Clift (2&1). Graham Marson and Iain Stewart gained the solitary half point that meant that both teams scored 3½ points each.

The Enmore Ladies Roger Cup team played their semi final at Long Sutton against Wells and won 5/2. They now play the final against Taunton Vale at Taunton and Pickeridge on September 6.

The Past Lady Captains played for the Brydon Cup and this was won by last year's captain Anne Perry with 35 points. In the final of the Ladies Jubilee Salver, Alison Lee and Rose Jarvis narrowly beat Alice Robinson and Jayne Errington in a very close contest.

The mixed Lamb Cup winners were Lynne Backshall and John Millett with Janet Waplington and Viv Dennis taking the runners up spot ahead of Jane Millett and John Rigler.

Club captain, Martyn Clapp, and Ladies captain, Heather Saxton, playing with their respective partners, Tracey and Mark represented the club in the Saunton Mixed Foursomes Jamboree team event and took 2nd place behind the home club with a total 74 stableford points.
