A Bridgwater squash star has been selected to represent Great Britain in the World University Squash Championship in Melbourne, Australia, this month.
Emma Chorley, 22, a former deputy head girl of East Bridgwater Community School, joined the professional squash tour on leaving sixth form and shot up the woman’s world rankings to number 64. Last September she returned to study a HND in sports science at Bridgwater College - but continued to fit in her squash training.
Last February, in the Polish Open, unseeded Emma sailed through the qualifying rounds but came up against the number one seed in the main draw.
Emma then overcame the number 30 3-0, followed by the number five seed, before losing out in the semi-finals to the Czech number one Lucie Fiaolva.
In April Emma entered the British Under 23 tournament where she reached the final and just lost out on the national title 3-2 - after a gruelling game against full-time professional and Welsh number one Deon Saffery.
Emma is now heading to Australia for the World University Championship, in a trip sponsored by Bridgwater’s Mike Berry and Maxwells Chartered Accountants.
Emma told the Mercury: “I would like to thank Maxwells who have been very generous in sponsoring me over the years, especially with the current economic climate.
“Without this support I would have been unable to pursue or have found success with my squash career.”
