Hockey: Bridgwater clubs results round-up

3:40pm Monday 15th March 2010

Bridgwater Men's 5th 4, Sidmouth C 2

THE fifth side were hopeful of picking up much needed points and a morale boosting victory.

The home side fell behind early on after a defensive lapse left keeper Russ Pigden exposed and conceded a second after another defensive error.

Bridgwater's young midfield and forwards worked hard and eventually pulled a goal back through Steve Pigden.

Sidmouth restored their two-goal lead after half time but during a battling last ten minutes from Bridgwater, Dan Pigden flicked the ball into the corner of the net to restore respectability to the score.

Man of the match: Steve Pigden.

Bridgwater Ladies 1st 1, Sidmouth 3

BRIDGWATER entered this home game knowing that it was likely to be a game of attrition, and so it proved.

The first half was disjointed with neither team really taking control and a succession of whistles did not allow for a flowing game.

All the goals came in the second half with Sidmouth opening the scoring from a penalty kick but Bridgwater responded through an open play goal by Lorraine Norman.

Bridgwater then conceded another two goals from short corners.

Player of the match: Lorraine Norman.

Bridgwater Ladies 1st 4, Tavistock 0

BRIDGWATER travelled to Devon with a slightly changed team as Julie Morrish and Kate England stepped up from the second side.

Lorraine Norman opened the scoring on a slow and sandy pitch, while Lucy Burridge, Kate England and Charlie Lewis pitched in with goals to produce a convincing victory.

Player of the match: Charlie Lewis

Bridgwater C 2, Ottery Crickets C 1

BRIDGWATER had to get more than a draw against Ottery, who were five points ahead with two games left.

They were looking comfortable with the score at 0-0 but keeper Codd made an instinctive double save as Ottery pushed one.

Bridgwater soon took the lead with a well-struck deflected short corner shot from Whitehead.

He doubled his tally minutes later but despite their dominance, Bridgwater conceded from a flick, after Codd took out an Ottery striker.

This was a hard fought win for Bridgwater with several individual performances.

Players of the match: Turner and Hedaux.

Sidmouth Men's A 3, Bridgwater Men's 2nds 4

BRIDGWATER travelled to Sidmouth in the penultimate match of the season knowing a point would keep them up.

They got off to a positive start working the ball well round the back and put Sidmouth under a lot of pressure.

Pope made it 1-0 to Bridgwater after good work from Chris Lines and the score remained the same at half time.

It wasn't long until Lines' hard work was rewarded as he smashed the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Sidmouth reacted by scoring from a short corner but Bridgwater remained strong and scored their third through Lines once more, who picked the ball up on the edge of the 25, beat the defence and fired in on his reverse.

Bridgwater went 4-1 through Pope, who put it over the keeper.

A combination of tiredness and unusual decisions allowed Sidmouth back into the game as they scored two more goals with minutes left on the clock.

Bridgwater held on and secured three vital points.

Player of the match: Chris Lines, who played his last game for Bridgwater as he enters the Marines. The club would like to thank him for his contribution to team and wish him all the best.

Bridgwater 1sts 2, Sidmouth 1

SIDMOUTH needed to win to secure promotion and have a chance at winning the league in this important game.

They had most of the possession in the first half but Bridgwater worked hard to stop this turning into goals.

Bridgwater took the lead with the match evenly poised. Harry Lee broke up the play in his own half, passed it to Matt Slocombe, who laid it off for Jenkins to find Thomas Lott in the D and score into an empty net.

Bridgwater were the happier team at half time as they went in 1-0 up.

The home side worked their socks off in the second half and went 2-0 up through Lott again after a piece of individual skill.

Sidmouth put on more pressure in the final moments of the game and were rewarded with a goal two minutes from time.

Bridgwater held on and once again showed they are a match for the top sides.
