IT was a win/win situation for the town this Saturday as the Somerset Netball Knock-Out Cup saw its first ever all Bridgwater final.
Both clubs were well supported and Jupiter's supporters intended to be heard, encouraging their team throughout the game.
Jupiter made a very nervous start with Gems stating their intentions early in the game.
However, timely interceptions helped Jupiter settle and put pressure on Gems. Fantastic defensive work by Lisa Durant ensured the Gems' shooter was unsettled for most of the game.
Smart defending from Imma Stone and outstanding defensive cover from Rachel Simpson turned the game comfortably in Jupiter's favour by half time.
Once in their stride, Jupiter's game flowed impressively, with effective play in the final third of the court by Baylea Charles and Amy Fournier.
Amy Shaw and Rachael Selway worked tirelessly to position themselves in the semi circle despite constant pressure from Gems' defenders, and the team was rewarded by their accurate shooting at crucial moments.
Jupiter's persistence saw them increase their lead and forced Gems in to making changes in a bid to stop their opponents controlling the game.
Jupiter remained focussed and, apart from the early shaky start, their resolve and belief never wavered as they victoriously lifted the cup. Jupiter are back in action next week as they strive to become 2009/10 Premier Division champions.
Final score: Jupiter 32, Gems 22
Venus 32, Mars 29
VENUS made a sluggish start in their interclub game against Mars.
Poor passing led to many Mars interceptions and goal scoring opportunities.
An early injury to Sam Woolacott saw Jade Edwards take the court as centre.
Venus, clearly out of sorts, were lucky to take a half time lead of 18-16 and after a team talk Venus were determined to come out firing on all cylinders.
Good defensive work from Venus player of the match, Emma Brett, saw many interceptions but Venus found it hard to break down the Mars defence of Hollie Cornish and Emily Page-Symonds, who worked hard to stop the Venus shooters.
Hazel Hucker and Hannah Date applied pressure on Mars's shooters but it proved futile, as superb balls in were unstoppable.
Outstanding shooting from Paige Langdon and Norah Lewis finished them off. At the final whistle, Venus had just managed to cling on to a 32 - 29 win. Mars player of the match was Hollie Cornish.
