HAVING run away with the qualifying section of Enmore Park’s Gent’s Winter League since last October, Rob Hake and Steve Hayes made a slow start in the final on Sunday.

Their back nine improved but, by then, the damage was done and they had to be content with the prize for best score in qualifying.

Meantime, Alex Clapp and Steve Chrystall had six birdies between them in a score of 47 Stableford points.

Three of those birdies were through the 15th to the 18th holes to secure victory by one point ahead of Richard Sykes and Rob Fear in second place with 46 points.

With the Captain in Augusta watching the Masters, past captain Rob Fear presented the prizes.

Next Sunday, Enmore is staging an Open Day to which everyone is welcome.

From 11am there is Junior Talent Spotting - no previous experience is required and all equipment can be provided.

There are group lessons for adults, as well as fun competitions on the putting green and visitors will enjoy buggy tours of the beautiful parkland course.

A unique membership offer will be available on the day and there is a full catering service in the recently refurbished clubhouse.

Social membership is also available - full details can be found at enmorepark.co.uk

BOTH Brean Golf Club’s Avalon League teams opened their season with home games on Sunday and both recorded wins on Brean turf.

Team captain for 2018 Matt Shaw led the Division 3 team into battle in a local derby against Isle of Wedmore which saw them end the day as 4-1 winners.

Following that game was the Division 5 side in another local derby against Worlebury.

Dave Morgan’s men won by three games to two to start their 2018 campaign with a win.

Ian Adams and Barrie Tucker ended the current Super Series with a win as they triumphed also on Sunday in the Betterball Stableford.

They carded 43 points to win by three from Captain Elect Trevor Pitt and Tony Higgins but only after they prevailed in a countback with Stewart Garrett and Tony Groves.

Dan Broom had a superb round in some testing conditions to take the April Stableford on Saturday.

Despite missing the worst of the morning rain, the 5-handicapper still had to conquer the soft ground conditions and amassed 42 points to win his division by six from cub champion Matt Shaw.

Steve Hill was the top man in Division 2 with his 39 points.

An impressive front nine including seven pars set him up for his one point victory over Nigel Hodges, who defeated Mats Mattsson on a countback for the runners up prize.

Ian Rogers secured the Third Division award with a card of 36 points beating the 34 points of Rich Lambert into second spot.

Brian Read won the April Medal and with it booked his spot in the Seniors team for the annual Sports Celebrity Am in June.

He scored a nett 67 to win Division One by two from Barrie Tucker and Mike Allen, with Tucker shading a countback to get the runners-up prize.

Bob Toller was the leading score in Division 2 with a nett 72 as the higher handicappers struggled a little in the soft conditions.

The leading three scores overall all get the opportunity to join Seniors Captain and represent the section in June so it will be Tucker and Allen completing the quartet along with the winner Read.

Members secretary Linda Edmondson was the winner of the Lady Secretary Shanker for the second year running with 33 points.

She held a six-point winning margin in the Stableford event that only permits each player to use two clubs and their putter.

Runner-up was Ladies’ club champion Lyn Bird, with Liz Blackwell third.
