Newent 49 North Petherton 31

NORTH Petherton produced a better performance than the scoreline suggests, but still slipped to defeat at current league leaders Newent on Saturday, writes Simon Freeman.

A few moments of poor concentration and discipline ultimately cost the visitors the game, but they did score four tries to secure a bonus-point and ensure they didn't leave the Forest of Dean empty handed.

Petherton made a strong start, despite the fact that players were being pulled in from the seconds at the last moment against a team with a 100% record.

The visitors created many phases against a good defensive unit and stretched them around the park.

The home team created opportunities only to be knocked back by some resolute defending, which lifted spirits and got Pethy firing.

However, ill-discipline began to creep in with two yellow cards not helping the situation and Newent began to skilfully exploit their numerical advantage to exert more pressure and build a big lead.

Pethy responded impressively and showed plenty of spirit, but it was just too late to begin a fightback that would influence the result.

However, the positives are a few younger lads are getting their chance with Ty Harris, Jack Coles and Harry Guttheridge all putting in a good shift. Jack Kohler has returned and is looking keen especially with his defending which lifts the team.
