Young pledges future to Bridgwater Town

Bridgwater Town boss Rob Dray has received a huge boost ahead of pre-season training after club captain Chris Young pledged his future to the club.

The club's all-time leading goal scorer joins Mat Pitcher and Andy Robertson in staying for the up-coming season.

As Dray deals with an exodus of players to Craig Laird's Weston, he has described Young's commitment as a “real coup” for the club.

He said: “Chris was one of the players who could cut it playing in the Conference South but his work circumstances and the fact he's married played some part in his decision to stay.

“But it's fantastic he's staying. If Chris was playing in the final matches of last season, Bridgwater would have been promoted - there's no doubt about that.

“I have known him since he was 16 and he always shows great commitment.

“He wears his hard on his sleeve. He is Bridgwater through and through and bleeds red and white.”

On Pitcher and Robertson's decision to stay, Dray added: “Pitcher has been with us four season and travels from Yeovil every week.

“Last year was one of his best seasons and it's great he's staying.

“Robertson has played at a high level with Weston already but both want to stay here with the club and play under me and Milly (Kevin Milsom).

“It would have been easy for them to go up the M5 and have a go at a higher standard but their decisions show real commitment.”

The club has announced home pre-season friendlies against Cullompton on July 26 and Truro on August 7 and Dray is waiting to hear from Salisbury City boss Tommy Widdrington over a possible friendly with the Southern Premier League side.

Dray also confirmed the players will return to training on Thursday at Bridgwater College.

He said: “It will be a bit of a coming together for everyone. It will be about consolidation at the start with half a dozen players leaving but there are two or three who are still undecided.

“I am realistic. It will be a difficult season but there is no doubt we will be competitive.”
