Bridgwater Town bosses have been forced to cut costs but insist the club's long-term future is not under threat.

The club's board met last Thursday to discuss the financial difficulties which have arisen since several games were called off during the winter.

Treasurer Gordon Nelson told the Mercury players would now be paid weekly rather than per game on a temporary basis.

He said: “It's a cash flow problem and we have to be sensible and realise we have got a problem which we need to get through.

“I have been doing this job for 25 years and have seen it become similar to this in the past and we have always got through it and we shall resolve it again.

“I don't think the players are happy. It was a surprising decision for some of the committee but we have been monitoring things for a while and I knew there was very little income coming in with fewer home games and we have had to take steps to halt it.”

Mr Nelson also revealed the club tried to delay building a new stand at Fairfax Park last year to ease the cash flow issues, but was told it would have to pay back an £8,000 grant which had already been spent on installing the base of the stand.

Chairman Alan Hurford said: “If I thought this was serious enough I would have come to the Mercury in the first place but we are not in a desperate situation.”
