Bridgwater Cricket Club has bolstered its squad for the new season with the signing of former Somerset cricketer Steffan Jones.

The 38-year-old was playing for North Staffordshire and South Cheshire Premier Division side Leek but because of work and travelling commitments has decided to play closer to home.

Jones, who is head of cricket at Wellington School, called time on his first-class career with Derbyshire last season, but said he is looking forward to a summer at The Parks in 2012.

He said: “It is ideal for me to play nearer home and at least my family can come and watch.

“I know a few people down at the club and I am looking forward to it.

“I want to play cricket and I believe I can still play at this level so I was delighted when Bridgwater contacted me.”

Over the course of his 15-year career, Jones has represented Wales Minor Counties, Cambridge University, Northamptonshire and Kent as well as playing 84 first-class matches over two spells at Somerset County Cricket Club.

He played 40 first class matches for Derbyshire and took 123 first-class wickets.

He will join former Devon minor county opening bowler Ian Bishop to spearhead the Bridgwater attack this summer and chairman Mike Moran was delighted with the signing.

He said: “This is a very big coo for us and gives the team a massive boost after the loss of Callum Haggett.

“Steffan will help out with some of the bowlers at the club and this is just one aspect which is making us the top club in Somerset.”

Second team skipper Scott Sealey, who met with Jones last week, added: “We are really pleased because he has a lot of experience and can add quality to the team.”
