WEMBDON travelled away to Street for the final encounter of the season and were rewarded with a nervy four-run win to finish runners-up.
Wembdon opened with Rich Gower, the division’s leading run scorer, and Harry Lee and the pair looked solid scoring freely until Gower was caught at square leg. Two quick wickets in quick succession left Wembdon 25-2 from eight overs.
Sam Puddy had an edgy start but he and Lee steadied the innings, adding 72 for the third wicket.
At the half-way point, Wembdon were 100-3, the game evenly poised as Lee brought up his 50, but fell soon after. Aaron Phillips (20) and useful knocks from Dan Bingham and Brendan Pope ensured Wembdon finished on a par score of 186-7.
Street’s reply started cautiously without any early wickets lost but the introduction of Lee proved a good decision as his two quick wickets and one from Bingham reduced Street to 88-3 at drinks.
Rob Dickins supported Russell Pigden to race through the next 10 overs for only 20 runs and it was this pressure which accounted for Davis and Higgs.
Street needed 60 off the last 10 overs with four wickets remaining, which then became 11 from the last two overs thanks to Evely’s half-century.
Only one run came from the penultimate over and then six from the last to leave Street four runs shy of the winning line.
A huge thanks goes to all who have sponsored and supported the club in 2011, those who have coached, made teas, etc. The club’s presentation evening takes place on October 21 at Bar 27.
