Glastonbury 219-6 beat Shapwick & Polden 218 all out by 4 wkts

SHAPWICK & Polden lost out to second-placed Glastonbury on Saturday, but have still inched towards league survival ahead of the final round of matches.

Hosts Shapwick won the toss and chose to bat first, with openers Stephen Tinnion (20) and Sam Edmunds (9) making it to 24 before the first wicket fell.

Dan Williams cleaned out the first three batsmen, leaving the home side on 32-3, but Fionn Hand and Steven Spencer hit back well.

They took Shapwick past the 100-mark, before Hand was out for 31.

Spencer followed, for 50, to leave the hosts 140-6.

Useful late order runs came from Wayne Spencer (18), Steve Coppell (23) and Sean Stringer (35no), as they were all out for 218 off their 50 overs.

For Glastonbury, Williams claimed 5-46 off 10 overs, and Harry Ellison 3-48 off nine.

The visitors began their innings badly, losing both openers for ducks as Coppell and Stringer struck, but John Stratton entered the fray at 4-2.

He plundered an unbeaten century, backed up by Matt Shawcross (17), Sam Morris (26) and Williams (37no).

Stratton ended on 102 as Glastonbury reached their target in 45.5 overs, with four wickets to spare.

Stringer took 2-31 off seven overs and Wayne Spencer 1-23 off 10 for the hosts.

Shapwick took seven points from the match, and sit 20 points clear of the relegation spots – with Taunton Deane in between – before their match at bottom side Claverham (12.30pm).

Bridgwater 2nd XI 153-9 beat North Petherton 1st XI 147 all out by 1 wkt

BRIDGWATER 2nds won a thrilling mid-table encounter with North Petherton, the hosts sneaking home by one wicket.

On winning the toss, visitors Pethy batted first, but fell to 0-1 with the loss of Tom Williams for a duck.

Brad Porteous stepped in and made a rapid 25, only to fall at 50-4.

Paul Short was then the main source of runs, as he worked his way to 53no with wickets falling around him.

Short remained unbeaten through to the end, but the tail offered little as the away side were dismissed for 147 in 42.5 overs.

Matt Habberfield starred with 3-14 off 10 overs, while his Bridgwater team-mates Daniel Rossiter (2-15 off six), Tom Bellinger (2-20 off 6.5) and Ed Habberfield (2-40 off 10) claimed two wickets each.

The hosts’ reply began badly, as Dominic Court departed off the second ball.

Liam Kitch (20) and Todd Barrett (10) took their side up to 30, but at that point Bridgwater suffered a mini-collapse, from 30-1 to 31-4.

Thankfully for the home side, their mid to lower order had runs in them, with Ed Habberfield making 16, Kyran Devitt a quick-fire 31 (off 24 balls) and Archie Marsh 23.

Nonetheless, at 123-8 there was still plenty of work to be done, and Rossiter stepped forward with an unbeaten 21 to take his side up to the finish line.

Matt Habberfield (2) fell to Liam Winter at 146-9, though, setting up a thrilling finish.

Ian Higgins was not messing about, however, as he smashed a 6 off his third ball to win the game by one wicket in 45.3 overs.

For Pethy, Paul van Meekeren took 3-16 off 10 overs, Will Pope 3-16 off nine, and Winter 2-39 off 10.

This Saturday sees fourth-placed Bridgwater travel to third-bottom Chard, while Pethy, in fifth, host leaders Weston-super-Mare (both 12.30pm).

Staplegrove 1st XI 117-5 beat Wembdon 1st XI 114 all out by 5 wkts

IAN Bishop was Wembdon's nemesis on Saturday, as he took seven wickets to help hosts Staplegrove to a five-wicket victory.

Wembdon won the toss and batted first, only to lose openers Dan Bingham and Brendan Pope cheaply.

Sam Puddy (32) and Jonathan Brockwell (25) took the visitors up to 73-2, at which point Bishop's reign of terror began.

He ended with figures of 7-22 off 7.2 overs as Wembdon slid to 114 all out.

Jake Pantling (23) and Ben Howe (29no) hauled the Staplegrove tally upwards, but at 59-4 the result was still in the balance as Josh Henry (2-29 off 10 overs) and Pope (2-36 off 10) struck.

But Aaron Nurcombe joined Howe and added 16, before Bishop capped a sensational all-round display by scoring 23no to help finish the job.

Wembdon, who remain third in the table, host already-relegated Wellington in their final match this Saturday (12.30pm).
