Wembdon 204-8 lost to Wellington 205-7 by three wickets

WEMBDON suffer a rare defeat away to Wellington on Saturday as they slipped back to third with three games remaining.

An unbeaten 90 by Dan Bingham and a half-century from Josh Marrs helped Wembdon to a below-par total, but it wasn’t enough to stop Wellington reaching their target with five overs remaining.

The Wembdon openers saw off the any early threat and moved on to 47 from 13 overs, but a superb caught and bowled dismissed Brockwell for 17.

Australian Marrs entered the game as Bingham reached his half century but it was Marrs who scored the quicker of the two, cutting and driving particularly well against spin.

The pair shared a stand of 83 for the third wicket which had Wellington rattled in the sweltering heat, until Marrs got a fine inside edge on to his own stumps for a very classy 51 off 54 balls.

Bingham searching for his maiden first XI century could only look on as the Wembdon middle order failed to land the big blows they were aiming for.

Batsman five to nine they could only add 18 between them as three Wembdon wickets fell all with the score on 180.

Wembdon skipper Richard Eckley played a late cameo finishing 15 not out as Bingham carried his bat for the entire 50 overs for a patient 90 not out, as they finished on a disappointing 204-8.

Wellington moved on to 110-2 at the half way stage of the innings.

Gliddon got the wicket of Short (13) whilst Brockwell returned to get the wicket of dangerous South African, Gouwis (21).

But Wellington needed just 19 from the final 10 overs and despite a flurry of late wickets, Rob Moysey hit the winning runs.

Wembdon host Staplegrove on Saturday, 12.30pm start.
