ASHCOTT and Shapwick’s fine run in the National Twenty20 Knockout Cup came to end on Sunday as they were comfortably beaten by nine wickets by Frocester.

None of the home side’s batsmen were able to truly dominate the Frocester bowling and with wickets falling regularly, they were only able to muster a disappointing 114-9 in their 20 overs.

In their reply the visitors lost Uzi Gureshi early on, but Michael Beard and Tom Wand batted with increasing confidence to take Frocester into the South-West area finals with five overs to spare.

n EXPLOSIVE centuries from Ashcott and Shapwick’s Dan Cooper (117) and Wayne Spencer (100 not) proved in vain as their match against Downend was abandoned after 49 overs of the first innings on Saturday.

Ashcott had amassed 358-9 when the rain came, with Spencer’s hundred coming off of just 48 balls.

Ashcott and are now just four points clear of the relegation zone in Premier 1 of the West of England league after their frustrating afternoon.

Ashcott face second-placed Frocester at Northbrook Road on Saturday, knowing a win could put clear daylight between themselves and second-bottom Corsham.

They will be hoping to carry last Saturday’s batting form into the crucial clash to support their strong bowling unit.

After Frocester, Ashcott travel to Keynsham before playing host to Taunton St Andrews.

They then finish with two away fixtures, at bottom club Ilminster and league leaders Bath – two fixtures which could define their season.
