ASHCOTT and Shapwick's James Haggett scrambled a single from the final ball of the match to seal a nail-biting tie in their match against Corsham.

Needing two to win from the final delivery, Haggett could only manage a single as both sides managed 236 from their 50 overs. Earlier, James Hayman recorded figures of 6-67 for Ashcott as they reigned in a strong start from the visitors.

Corsham won the toss and batted first and openers Robin D'Souza and Toby Davies put on 53 in the first nine overs.

But a painful blow on the knee caused D'Souza to retire hurt, and following this, two wickets then fell before another run was added.

The home side appeared to be gaining the upper hand as two more wickets fell by time the score had reached 83, but the visitor's fortunes were revived by a partnership of 89 between Steve Bullen (32) and Ashur Morrison (67).

James Hayman (6-67) returned to dismiss both with the score on 171, but the remaining Corsham batsmen, including the returning De Souza (48) took the score to 236 before Hayman once again struck to dismiss the last man with the penultimate ball of the innings.

Ashcott openers Daniel Cooper and Will Sobczak were untroubled by the Corsham attack and posted 112 before Cooper was out for 47.

At 159-2 with sixteen overs remaining Ashcott & Shapwick appeared to be on course for a comfortable victory, until two wickets in one Tom Foley over brought the visitors back into the match.

Wickets then fell at regular intervals and when Sobczak was out for a very well made 93, 17 runs were required off the last three overs with two wickets remaining.

The target was reduced to seven off the last over and when Steve Coppell was trapped LBW, James Haggett was left to score two off the final ball. But the tail-ender was only able to scramble a single to tie the scores and round-off a thrilling contest.
