A REMARKABLE spell of bowling from J Gardner fired Chilton Polden to a 64-run victory over Watchet 2nds in Division 7 of the Somerset Cricket League on Saturday.

Gardner finished with figures of 7-7 from four overs, as Chilton bowled their opponents out for just 120.

Earlier, W Pope (61) and J Ball (44) had carried Chilton to 184, a score that proved to be more than enough for the home side.

In the same division Middlezoy 2nds chased down 232 for victory against Kilmington and Stourton 2nds thanks to 68 from C Searle. S Ranson (48 not) and N Peppard (37) also chipped in as Middlezoy won by four wickets.

Ranson had earlier taken 4-50 to restrict Kilmington to 232-9 from their 45 overs.

North Petherton lost by just two wickets to Peasedown St John, despite an unbeaten 33 from P Thurston.

North Petherton could only manage 136 all out from their 45 overs and Peasedown crept to their target for the loss of eight wickets.

Spaxton were heavily beaten by Temple Cloud as they crashed to a 113-run defeat.

A Richards took 2-67 for Spaxton as Temple Cloud posted 258-5. In reply, only K Bellinger (47) added anything of sunstance as Spaxton were bowled out for 145.

In Division 1, North Petherton beat Castle Cary by four wickets thanks to 69 from H Bowdich and 62 not out from L Irish.

Castle Cary had posted 204-9, A Bunce taking 3-42, but it wasn’t enough as Irish struck a six to seal victory.

Middlezoy sealed a five-wicket victory over Kilmington and Stourton as they chased down 203 on Saturday.

I Bishop (4-44), J Gray (3-63) and N Barnard (2-36) helped to bowl Kilmington out for 202 before N Troman (90) and K Barnard (33) guided Middlezoy home.

Bridgwater 314-7 Wells 291 BRIDGWATER A rattled up 314-7 against Wells in Division 2 but only managed prevail by 23 runs.

Their chief scorers were Hewson (89), Osmant (88) and Coombes (52).

In reply, Wells opener C Churches took the game to Bridgwater with a blistering century. He was well supported by opening partner J Moore (52) and B Stacey (27), but a superb spell of bowling from D Cocks (6-53) began to take the game away from Wells. As the scores drew closer, D Andison (3-51) returned to take the final few wickets and give Bridgwater ‘A’ the win. The club would like to extend their thanks to I.Osmant, G.Rossiter & T.Netto for all their hard work throughout the day. Bridgwater ‘A’ will play Wembdon II on July 14 in the semi-final of the minor Twenty20 cup. The game starts at 11am at Wembdon Cricket Club.

North Newton slumped to a 43-run defeat at the hands of Cheddar in Division 2.

J White (3-58) and P Jenkins (2-30) were the pick of the bowlers as Cheddar posted 240-8 from their 45 overs.

In reply, North Newton were always behind the rate despite 41 from C Barrington and 45 from J Sellick.

In Division 3, Kilve won a tight game against Wedmore by 17 runs thanks to 6-37 from C Clemenson.

In pursuit of 169-9, Wedmore were bowled out for 152 as Clemenson tore through the top-order.

Wembdon Academy crashed to a heavy defeat at the hands of Burnham 2nds in Division 8N, beaten by 124 runs.

Burnham made 260 despite 6-59 from R Paull. T Bennett (3-42) also chipped in, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Burnham posting an intimidating total.

S Pigden (44) put up some resistance, but Wembdon eventually collapsed to 136 all out.

Elsewhere in the division Chilton Polden beat Horrington 2nds by four wickets as they chased 192 to win.

In Division 9NW, Bridgwater Sports beat Huntspill and district 2nds by 106 runs despite being bowled out for just 176.

A half-century from B Winter (54) was the only significant contribution from a Bridgwater batsman, but R Gillard (4-16) and P Winter (2-16) made sure that Huntspill didn’t get anywhere near their target.
