BRIDGWATER Men’s 1st XI finished their season on a high by defeating Somerset Gryphons.

With the score at 2-2 for nearly the entirety of the second half –

Mulberry Threlfall-Eyres and Will Kelly scoring for Bridgwater – it was up to captain Tom Lott to net the winner.

Bridgwater sit fourth in the table, but Old Bristolians – one point behind – have one game left to play.

THE keenly-awaited inter-club match did not quite live up to expectations, as the 3rds’ lack of a finishing touch was the difference between the two teams.

Despite having the better of the first half, the 3rds found themselves 1-0 down through a Paul Bond short corner for the 2nds, effectively their first effort.

The A team improved with a few tactical changes in the second half, but it still took them until midway through the half to get their second from a Rich Payne reverse.

Eventually, throwing caution to the wind, the 3rds scored a bit of messy goal from Kieran Wood.

Bridgwater A finish the season in fifth place, with the B team bottom.

Man of the match: Jim Smith (3rds), Harry Rose (2nds).

BRIDGWATER 4ths put out a strong team as they travelled away for the last game of the season.

The hosts built numerous well-worked attacks, bringing out the best of Bridgwater keeper Hutter, but despite being under constant pressure the visitors scored twice before half-time.

The first came from a short corner, flicked in by Mike Eele, and Steve Turvey finished off a decent passing move to make it 2-0.

The second half brought more of the same, and against the run of play Bridgwater scored a third goal with a scrappy finish, with the last touch coming from Turvey.

The hosts had a goal disallowed, then minutes later they did get one on the board, making the last 10 minutes a nail-biting affair.

But the away side held on for the win, cementing fourth place in the table.

This was a good season all round for a team who failed to win a single game in the previous season.

FOR their penultimate league game, Bridgwater ladies travelled to Old Bristolians, knowing a win would see them leapfrog their opponents into fifth.

The visitors soaked up initial pressure, including a run of penalty corners, but midway through the first half the home attack broke through and scored.

The second half saw Bridgwater play with more confidence, and they were soon level with a goal from Sapphy Reed-Yang.

Possession was pretty even, but it was the away side who turned this to their advantage with a second goal, put in from Becca Tasker from a tight angle.

The game played out with a flurry of Bridgwater attacks but no change to the scoreline.

THE Ladies 2s kept their season going with a 3-1 win over Minehead.

After going 1-0 down the team rallied strongly, with a goal from Rose Baker and two from player of the match Jess Shobbrook.

Bridgwater are in sixth place with two games left, the first being away to Taunton Civil Service 2nds this Saturday (noon start).

BRIDGWATER Ladies, having reached Somerset Cup finals day, played in a round robin competition with Yeovil & Sherborne, Shepton Mallet and Weston-super-Mare on Sunday.

In their first game against Yeovil, they did a great job of containing the Premier Division team but were defeated by the only goal of the game late on.

After a 3-0 defeat to Shepton, Bridgwater really turned on the style in the final game against Weston, outplaying their opponents in all areas to win 4-0.

The goals came from Willow Hobbs, Becca Tasker, Beth Porter and Sapphy Reed-Yang.
