TALENTED centre back Chris McGrath is among 14 players to have put pen to paper for Bridgwater Town’s 2012/13 season and manager Kevin Milsom said he is happy with the additions to the side.

McGrath, the son of former Manchester United and Ireland legend Paul McGrath, starred for rivals Taunton Town last season but has followed his former manager, Paul West, up the A38 to become a crucial signing for Town.

West’s influence has also, no doubt, been a key factor in Ollie Chamberlain, Tim Legg, Ross MacNab and the Veal brothers, Craig and Phillip, deciding to make the move to Fairfax Park.

Luke Purnell, who ended last season between the sticks at Fairfax Park, is staying, while Stuart Wood returns from Hungerford Town to add competition for the No 1 jersey, with live-wire Joe McClellan also joining from the Berkshire side.

Last season’s top goalscorer, Dave Pearse, will again be fighting the Robins’ cause, as is Bradley Middleton and youngster Tom Hurley, while Graham Mercieca returns after a brief sojourn at Taunton Town at the end of last season.

The final new recruit at present, Kye Mountford, joins from Toolstation Western League side Bristol Manor Farm – but there are more signings on the cards once holidays and other commitments are out of the way.

Milsom said: “We are very pleased with the signings and encouraged by what players we have been able to attract.

“We have a good mix of new players in the squad and it’s good to have them on board. Even though Graham [Mercieca] left last season it is great to have him back and he will fit in wonderfully well.”

To date, 14 players have agreed terms and signed on Evo-Stik League Southern forms.

Pre-season activity this week sees the side face Wellington tonight (July 31) at Fairfax Park and Cullompton away on Thursday (August 2) – both 7.45pm kick-off.

  • THE club’s annual general meeting has also been scheduled for August 22 at Fairfax Park with a 7pm start.
