BRIDGWATER Town co-manager Karl Baggaley is quietly confident his side could spring an FA Cup surprise when they travel to Gosport Borough in the first qualifying round tomorrow (ko 3pm).

The hosts are two divisions above the Robins, but sit rock bottom of the Evo-Stik Southern Premier after losing all five of their league matches so far, including an 8-0 home defeat to Basingstoke Town on Monday.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Baggaley said: “It will be a good experience to play a Southern Premier side and it’s not every day you get to test yourselves like that.

“If we play like we did at Wells on Saturday [a 3-0 win for Town] then I wouldn’t rule out a positive result in our favour.

“They are a bit like us, in that they were relegated last year and had to rebuild over the summer with a young side.

“Gosport like playing good football and we are encouraging our lads to get the ball down and pass it, so it should make for an entertaining game.”

With £3,000 at stake for the winners, there is a financial incentive for Bridgwater as well as the chance to progress further in the world’s most prestigious domestic cup competition.

The injury to Callum Ham, who was stretchered off in the aforementioned victory over Wells last weekend, is not as bad as first feared, but he is a doubt for Saturday.

Meanwhile, there are hopes that Mike Duffy could be back sooner than the anticipated six weeks after he damaged ankle ligaments against Brislington.

ELSEWHERE tomorrow, both Bridgwater Town Reserves and Middlezoy Rovers are in Somerset Senior Cup first round action.

Bridgwater travel to Milborne Port, looking to build on their 2-0 win over Shirehampton on Saturday.

As for Middlezoy, they are aiming to bounce back from their first defeat of the season - 3-1 against Chilcompton Sports - as they host Odd Down Reserves.

Both matches kick off at 2.30pm.
