BRIDGWATER TOWN co-manager Dave Pearse praised a “good all-round team display” after his side defeated Brislington 1-0 on Saturday to progress to the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Steve Holland’s first-half strike separated the two sides at Fairfax Park as the Robins bounced back from a 2-0 league defeat against the same opposition last weekend.

Reflecting on the result, Pearse said: “We started slowly and they could have been ahead early on, but once we had scored we took the game to them and should have won by more.

“We changed the formation and tried to alter our style - we were quite direct against them last Saturday, but this time around we got the ball down and passed it.

“It was a solid team display in which everyone played their part, but Jack Jenkins was probably the standout - he was excellent.”

The Robins have been rewarded with a long trip to Gosport Borough in the next round, which Pearse was pleased with.

On the draw, he said: “It’s a good challenge for us and it’s nice to have something different to look forward to.

“It will be a good day out for the club, and I’d rather go somewhere new than play Taunton or Tiverton.”

Before that tie on September 2, the Robins’ busy league schedule continues with Shepton Mallet (tonight) and Wells City (Saturday) to come this week.

Looking ahead to those matches, Pearse said: “We are a bit light in the centre of midfield due to injuries - Mike Duffy will miss the next six weeks with ankle ligament damage - and over the coming weeks we will need everyone in the squad to play their part.

“Shepton Mallet and Wells won’t make it easy for us, but if we take Saturday’s performance into this week I’m confident we can pick up six points.”
