Bridgwater Town Reserves 6 Cutters Friday 1

DESPITE a comfortable score line, Bridgwater Town Reserves manager Dan Wright was far from satisfied with his side’s performance during Saturday's 6-1 victory over Cutters Friday, describing their quality and execution as ‘embarrassing at times’.

The Robins fell behind on ten minutes following a mistake by goalkeeper James Annison, but hit back with goals from Andy Venning, Matt Connick (2), Mike Duffy, Tyne Govier and Owen Sellick – and afterwards, Wright gave a scathing assessment of his side’s performance.

He said: “It wasn’t the prettiest of games at all and no way near the best football this team has played since the beginning of last season.

“We may have scored six goals today but the quality and execution we displayed was at times embarrassing.

“Myself and the players are not happy because we have continually pushed our standards higher and higher and we want to compete in football matches at our highest standard.

“However we will take positives from the fact that we have scored six goals even when we are playing badly.”

Cutters took the lead having been gifted a wonderful opportunity to score into an empty net after goalkeeper James Annison lost possession to Friday’s striker.

Of all people, it was Andy Venning who got the equaliser from 20 yards out, beating the goalkeeper at his near post.

It took a while for Town to get going into the second-half, but did so with a change of shape.

Connick grabbed his first goal of the game, thumping his header into the roof of the net through a Govier corner.

A Duffy free kick on the edge of the penalty area took the score to 3-1 - and Duffy then turned provider, whipping a ball to the back post to pick out Champion who was brought down, before a calm and collected Tyne Govier stepped up and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

It was another Govier corner that gifted Connick his brace – and the final goal of the game came from Lewis’ long ball into the path of Sellick who neatly lobbed the ball over the goalkeepers head.
