BRIDGWATER Town Reserves Luke Buckingham said his side’s cup final performance side ‘epitomised their season’ following a dramatic shootout victory in the Somerset County League Cup final.

Buckingham praised the ‘fighting spirit’ of his players after Tyne Govier’s late spot-kick forced extra-time and then a penalty shootout – and the manager believes it has been a season to be proud of.

“The fighting spirit and character this group of players have shown throughout the year is incredible and we've developed a fantastic team spirit,” he said.

"In many ways, this performance epitomises our season.

“At 2-1 with 10 minutes to go most teams would have struggled to get back in the game, but we stuck to our principals and deservedly levelled the scores.

“I'll always judge the success of what we do as a reserve team by how many players we develop and go on to play for the first team - and I have no doubt whatsoever that this group of players have a bright future in the game.

“To finish in our highest league position since 2010 and win a cup, with the youngest squad in clubs history together with zero red cards is a record everyone can be proud of."
