Late goal is not enough for Town in cup defeat

Somerset Premier Cup, second round: Paulton Rovers 2, Bridgwater Town 1

TOWN were knocked out of the Somerset Premier Cup by their bogey side on a cold, wet Monday night, writes EDDIE ROBINSON. It was the third time Paulton had beaten them this season.

Jamie Price was back in the Town line-up after suspension, but Danny McCall kept his place, pushed forward into midfield, as Town played 4-4-2, a system that put a big onus on the lung-bursting efforts of Ben Kirk and Dan Forward to assist the front two.

The game bore a remarkable similarity to the league meeting between these sides at Paulton three weeks before. After an early flurry from Paulton, Bridgwater went on to dominate the first half.

They had all the possession, but their neat approach work could not open up a resolute defence. Although there were plenty of efforts on goal, not enough of them were on target.

Paulton reached the interval on level terms, their only dangerous effort having been a header from James which hit the post following a corner.

Town resumed still on top and Kirk should have tested the keeper more on a couple of occasions. Richard Lamacraft and Brett Trowbridge were enjoying the space to get Bridgwater forward down the left.

Then, on 74 minutes, a quick break found Orchard stranded and Shepherd picked out Dan Cleverley, who still had work to do before giving Tom Manley no chance with a good finish.

Eight minutes later, Paulton made the game safe as James, unmarked, headed in a free kick.

There was still time for a consolation goal. Kirk's cross from the left midfield picked out Trowbridge to head home, but Town were left with a sense of déjà vu.

Team: Manley, Price (sub Orchard 69), Martin, J Laird, Lamacraft (sub Irish 86), McCall, D Forward, Kirk, Monks (sub Trowbridge 43), Young, Pepperell. Attendance: 116.
