Striker Colbourne is Town target

BRIDGWATER Town are aiming to make Frome striker Toby Colbourne their first recruit for the 2008-09 season.

The powerful 27-year-old, who scored a lot of goals for Corsham when they pipped Town to the Toolstation League title in 2007, has had an injury-plagued first season at Frome, where he started only ten first-team games.

Town's co-manager Craig Laird said at the weekend: "He broke an ankle, then a wrist and also had a hamstring injury, so he hasn't had much football. It's the first time in his career that he has had injury problems."

Laird went on: "He's a big lad and a real handful for defences, just what we need. He always gave us trouble when he played for Corsham.

"He seems keen to join us and I've told him to come to pre-season training and see how he likes it.

"The only problem is that, although he is a car salesman, he doesn't drive. He lives in Bristol and seems to think that he will manage to get to us."

Town will start their pre-season on Tuesday, June 24, and train three times a week until the BGB League programme gets under way in August.

Laird has made two more attempts to contact defender Piers Govier, without success. "He's got a new number, which I managed to get, but he still doesn't return my calls," said Laird, adding: "We must resolve the situation and I need him to speak to me."

Last week's Mercury report about Govier attracted several reader comments on our website, some of them believed to be from his team-mates. See www.bridgwatermercury.co.uk

Every Manager I’ve ever worked with wouldn’t wash their dirty linen in public. Everyone knows why Piers has gone. He didn’t want to play for Drayer’s reserve team. We have lost good players like John Harris and Deeksy because the reserves are for Drays mates and kids that work for him. Lairdy wont do anything against Dray because he pays his wages. Even when Dray tortured Natt nothing was done about it.

unsubstantiated facts from an ill informed ex player, who obviously couldnt get into either side can be potentially dangerous to the well being of our club. So it is in the clubs best interest that as an informed member of the club
i reply on their behalf.Firstly nameless faceless people who hide behind comments like this are not welcome at the club, so if you are "A player" and youre not happy go somewhere else and play very easy really .

1, nobody has washed their linen in public ,piers hasnt contacted any of the management team in any way or form . THe supporters wanted to now why he was missing and this was the truth.

2 Piers and Rob go back for nearly ten years and as i am aware are firm friends . at no time did he refuse to play for the reserves this actually does a disservice to piers.

3. Harris and Deekes felt their playing careers lay at minehead and watchet as they wanted to play 1st team football not reserve team football their choice no other reason , both managers still speak regularly to john and hope to see him back at the club in the near future.

4.Rob and Craig are friends with all the players most of them being nurtured from a young age .

5tThe rest of the comments are those of a petulant spoil child with no apparent idea of reality an are not worthy of comment .

I hope this puts an end to these scurilous comments. And remember if you dont like it at our club go elsewhere your not welcome.

i would also like to add that whoever this so called "A Player" who i very much doubt is part of the current playing. Nat was not tortured by Rob (that may i add is verging on liable), have you heard of team spirit or banter. i know single handily that Bridgwater has team great team spirit and all of the lads get on very well with each other and the management. i believe this is some ex player that is trying to spoil what as been two of the best season that Bridgwater have seen in a long time and this "A Player" is jealous that he is not a part of it.

couldnt agree more with in the know as an ex player and keen supporter and sponsor, Drayer has been a legend on and off the pitch for bridgy ,lairdy and drayer have transformed the club in the last 2 years ! remember league tables dont lie!! just another bitter ex player who couldnt make the grade at somersets most progressive club.

i wish Dray would stop writing things about himself and useing this a his own voicebox. he did wrong by Nat and all his mates in the reserves know it but wont say anything for fear of being dropped.

irrespective of the comments made by A Player, if Rob chooses to pick one player over another thats a managerial decision as it would be at any club at any level. Results over a season are based on team selection and those selections aren't always popular with plyaers that don't make the team for whatever reason. Should those selections be wrong ones then the results will suffer - and they haven't, so obviously the comments aren't really justified are they. I've plyed the game, not always been happy with team selections, but you just get on with it and fight for your place or change teams. Simple as that. Anyway I'd be more concerned about Robs dress sense than his managerial skills

Can we now take all the nets down at the sides of the pitch coz Nunny has (at last left the club)? Not one of Trevors better signings!
We miss Jon though,he was a good lad

The word has it that there is a good buzz around both teams at the moment although I do think there is a need to address the reasons that good players are leaving our club. Players like Jon gave a different option and Deekesy and Lee Smyth are only young and wanted to feel involved. Stumps has to be blooded this term and we need to get Kinger back to his best.
