North Petherton 32, Sidmouth 29

NORTH Petherton for the third week running ran out victorious in a game that was decided by less than one score, writes Simon Freeman.

Harry Roberts gave Pethy a quick start to settle the nerves with two penalties to take a 6-0 lead.

Second row James Cox continues to act like an extra back rower in the loose and with an excellent sense of direction found himself available to take a scoring pass as Pethy supplied him with the opportunity in the 15th minute; Roberts converted to lead 13-0.

The visitors tested Pethy robustly and eventually forced the home side to concede a kickable penalty but Pethy refused to yield and the ever-improving Aaron Gibbs, who continues to impress with his linking play, was on the end to extend the lead. Roberts converted to take the team into half-time leading 20-3.

Damian Griffin helped Pethy get off to a flyer in the second half and scored in the corner to make it 25-3 and the bonus point fourth try was scored by Cox to lead 32-3.

The visitors were spurred on, though, and scored 26 points in the final 25 minutes but Pethy held on for the win which saw them consolidate their position at the top of the table.

Man of the match: James Cox.

l On Saturday, Petherton travel to mid-table Paignton. Kick-off is 3pm.
