Ashcott & Shapwick 279-5 beat Chippenham 232 by 47 runs

A CENTURY from Callum Haggett and four wickets from James Hayman secured victory and the WEPL Premier 2 title for Ashcott and Shapwick.

The squad was admirably led by Nayan Kamarkar who proved yet again to be an astute and popular captain, always getting the best out of his team mates.

All the squad showed good cricketing skills self belief and a great team spirit. Batting first Ashcott posted a competitive total of 279-5 with Callum Haggett who has been in excellent with the bat all the season scoring 116 off 136 balls.

In an opening stand of 116 with Haggett, Sean Savage made 54. Savage, the club's overseas player from South Africa, has been an outstanding member of the squad both with the bat and ball.

Wayne Spencer (27), Steve Tinnion (14) and Ben Rudge (15) kept the score moving and in the closing overs of the Ashcott innings and Lee Edmunds (36 not out) added extra impetus to the total.

Chippenham fought back well and a splendid 98 by Tom Young saw the score move to 211-4 but Ben Rudge bowled dangerman Lee Ward for 34 and Hayman and James Haggett routed the next five batsmen for just 11 runs as Chippenham fell for 232.

Steve Tinnion had a good day behind the stumps taking three catches and captaining the side for the day in Karmakar's absence.

BY winning this crucial final game Ashcott and Shapwick have gained promotion to Division 1 for next season. A mixture of young and older players have, under Shaun Watts, displayed an excellent team spirit and played good positive cricket.

The team have gained more bowling and batting points than any other team in the division and with both teams winning promotion on the same day in their respective leagues, players and officials of the club can feel a sense of pride in what has been achieved.
