PROFESSIONAL duo David Haines and Andrew March made sure the name of Brean Golf Club featured prominently in the upper reaches of West Region PGA events last week.

Haines made the trip last Wednesday to Saunton in North Devon to represent Brean alongside club member Ian Adams in the Regional Final of the Virgin Atlantic National Pro Am. The prize awaiting the winners was an all-expenses-paid trip to the Grand Final in Mexico in December.

Adams won the club qualifying round earlier this year and the pair came close to securing another victory. On a tough day for scoring on the links course, they ended two under par which was eventually three shots off top spot but just a single stroke behind the runners-up in a tie for fourth place.

March was in action the previous day at Forest Hills in Gloucestershire in a Pro Am event and ended the day as the winner. As has become the norm for recent events, the weather was poor and rain fell for most of the round.

The event was a shotgun start, so all players started from a different tee and March was drawn on the 11th tee. His day didn’t get off to the best of starts, though, as he dropped shots at three of his first four holes but, from that point onwards, his golf was of the highest quality.

He managed to keep any more bogies off his card and picked up two crucial birdies with the help of some good putts along the way to eventually sign for a one-over-par round of 73. This proved to be enough for a two stroke victory on a day when many of the other players seemed to struggle with both the course and conditions.
