BASKETBALLERS from Bridgwater are cock-a-hoop after being crowned the ‘Best in the West’ to round off a memorable season.
As winners of the Somerset Basketball League, Bridgwater Bucs gained entry into the prestigious competition which sees the top teams from Devon, Cornwall, Gloucestershire and Bristol going head-to-head.
On the Saturday, Bridgwater beat Devon’s Exeter Nomads 80-56 and then saw off Wadebridge Storm in the second match.
Bucs were trailing by 10 points at the halfway stage of Storm’s match but a tightened defence and precise shooting in offence saw them claim a 76-64 win.
On the Sunday, Bucs had a tough encounter against Bristol’s Lockleaze Renegades, who had a clear size advantage. Despite that, Bucs managed to scrape to a 59-52 win.
In the final match against Gloucester’s Warriors, a win would give Bucs the title.
In an intense match, Bucs shone and, even though the score was close, the Warriors were never a real threat and Bucs took the win 49-41.
