HAYGROVE’S first girls cricket team played their opening games of hard ball cricket at Queen’s College at the weekend.
The first game saw Haygrove beat Blundells, the second saw a narrow three-run defeat to Queen’s A and the final group game saw them beat King’s Ottery.
Notable performances saw Jess Webb take four wickets in her two overs, including three in four balls. Olivia Shorthouse, Cassie Coombes and Chelsea Close also all bowled accurately.
The semi-final saw Haygrove beat Wellington School. Cassie Coombes and Jess Webb batted throughout the 10 overs for 72 runs and the bowlers restricted Wellington to 36-9 from their ten overs.
The final saw Haygrove take on Queen’s A in a rematch. Haygrove set 66 to win with Coombes and Webb batting expertly again. In a nail-biting finale, the last over was bowled by Harriet with ten needed. The final ball was a dot ball and Haygrove won by three runs.
Trophies were presented by England Women’s international Fran Wilson. Captain Cassie Coombes picked up the batsman of the day and collected the winners’ trophy.
