Netball: Sydenham Gems run rings around Bridgwater Saturn

Bridgwater Saturn 25, Sydenham Gems 39 SYDENHAM Gems ran rings around Bridgwater Saturn, despite both sides being very evenly matched.

The first quarter saw Gems lead 8-9 and, despite tight defensive work and some timely interceptions by defensive duo Steph Carlin and Sally Haysham, Gems pulled ahead to a 22-12 lead by half time.

Saturn applied pressure during the second half of the match, with Chris Durant progressing play quickly down the court to increase the pace but, despite this, Gems continued with their lead and won the match.

Saturn players of the match were Chris Durant, Steph Carlin and Sally Haysham; Gems’ were Amy Witcombe and Danni Keirle.

Bridgwater Neptune 31 Vivary 48 WITH a changed line-up, Neptune took the court against a strong Vivary side from Taunton and took time to settle in as they trailed 3-11 after the first quarter.

Neptune started to find their feet and, with some accurate passing and foresight from Lisa Phillips, closed the gap to 13-23 at half-time. Strong defending by Emma Downes and interceptions by Emma Reynolds helped Neptune keep their target of scoring more than half.

Trailing 18-35 in the final quarter, Neptune found some inner strength and kept on a scoring par with Vivary, as both teams scored 13 goals.

Neptune lost 31-48 but gained that all important point.

Player of the match was Lisa Phillips.

Bridgwater Mars 45, Keinton 37 MARS avenged their defeat to Keinton earlier in the season.

Bridgwater started well and it was clear early on the defensive team of Coleen Bartlett and player-of-the-match Katie Chedzey, were a good match for the Keinton shooters, winning many interceptions and marking tightly.

In the second quarter, Mars pushed ahead 24-20 with 17-year-old Kat Jay, and Katie Chedzey feeding great balls into the attacking third.

The third quarter brought an awesome push from Mars, with quick and precise passing into the circle from Imogen Setter and Elaine Bartlett.

Good movement and space by the shooters Norah Lewis and Sarah Perry saw a lead of 39-26 at the end of the quarter.

After a nervy fourth quarter, Mars managed to maintain their lead and win.
