PLUMMETTING temperatures and frozen pitches wreaked havoc for the weekend’s sporting fixtures with the majority of our side’s postponing their matches.
All the rugby fixtures for Bridgwater and Albion’s four senior and junior teams were cancelled and all North Petherton’s matches fell foul to the sub-zero conditions.
Morganians match against Chard was also postponed and will now take place on either April 7 or April 14.
Bridgwater Town were not in action and the Reserves’ clash against basement club Glastonbury Town was postponed following a frozen Fairfax Park pitch.
Sydenham Netball Club had to call off all their matches on Saturday and a number of hockey matches were all cancelled after playing surfaces became unplayable.
North Petherton first team captain, James Carter, said the break should not interrupt his side’s good run of form as they continue their quest for promotion.
He said: “We managed to have an indoor training session just to keep us going so I think we will be fine ahead of our Somerset Cup quarter final with Burnham on Saturday.
“It is sometimes nice to have a week off as a few of the lads have some niggling injuries so we are hopeful they will clear up.”
All Taunton and District Saturday Football League matches were postponed as all the fields were frost-bitten by temperatures as low as minus 7C.
Bridgwater and Albion’s Director or Ruby, Gary Allen, said the club’s lack of weekend fixtures would not have a long term financial effect on the club.
He added: “We just have to take it on the chin, it affects us on the day but fortunately they were league matches which will be replayed so we will get it back on another day.
“The weather can leave you in limbo a bit but it was the right decision to cancel because you don’t want players getting injured on frozen pitches.”
