HARD-HITTING Bridgwater sibling duo Michael and Lizzy Hughes continued to impress in their latest respective fights.

The Wells Boxing Club pair and Chilton Trinity Technology College students are proving the club is rapidly becoming one of the best in the region.

Gifted Lizzy, 12 was up against Jodie Taylor on her own turf in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent last Saturday.

In the first round Lizzy came out with heavy overloaded punches knocking her opponent back into the corner.

Taylor came out in the second and picked up the pace trying to keep Lizzy away but she determinedly kept going by knocking Taylor’s head back and keeping her on the ropes.

But it was clear something wasn’t right and it later transpired Lizzy had broken her hand three minutes into the fight and didn’t tell anyone, but kept going into the third round.

However Lizzy didn’t get the decision she deserved and Taylor won by a majority. But Lizzy showed so much heart boxing with a broken hand, according to Wells coach Liam White.

He also said the youngster has a long future ahead of her in the sport and the feeling among spectators was that she deserved to win.

Meanwhile brother Michael was in action in Newbridge, South Wales the following night against Welsh International Champion Cody Davies of the Lions Den club.

In the first round Davies, 2kg heavier and a year older than Michael, came out throwing heavy shots trying to stop the talented 15-year-old using his reach advantage Michael threw some heavy right-handers knocking Davies into the corner and in the second round he stepped up the pace further.

The pair went toe-to-toe in the third but Michael’s long reach gave him the advantage and fired in some clean shots keeping Davies well back.

Michael eventually got the computer score 7-1 and goes through to the semi-finals in Guildford where he will face Simon O’Driscoll.

Enzo Calzaghe, father of former world champion Joe, was at the fight and paid Michael one of the highest compliments telling him he has a long future in boxing ahead of him.
