Bridgwater Town record away win at Uxbridge

By Eddie Robinson

Uxbridge 2, Bridgwater Town 3

MIDFIELD trio of Kirk, Beadle and Trowbridge immediately stamped their class on the game and Bridgwater took a deserved lead on ten minutes when a fine move down the right ended with Price and Young combining to set up a close range finish from Trowbridge.

They looked to extend their lead when Beadle fired out from 25 yards after good hold up play from Young.

Bridgwater were more dangerous down their right where the overlapping Price gave the home side some anxious moments.

Both sides had been knocked out of their FA Trophy replays and it was Bridgwater looking more likely to put those disappointments behind them.

It was midway through the first half before Uxbridge got to grips with Bridgwater’s fluid passing, who were quite prepared to play from the back with retaining possession their overriding concern. Little had been seen of Uxbridge as an attacking force when after 29 minutes they were awarded a free kick out on the left. A good delivery saw Bridgwater attempt to play the home forwards offside but allowed Rimmel two attempts to scramble the ball past the exposed Hutchings.

Bridgwater have been caught out in similar fashion twice this month.

Trowbridge came close to restoring Bridgwater’s lead when latching onto a Trowbridge ball from Young only to be denied by the on rushing keeper, who like his opposite number had not often been called into action.

Pitcher needed to make a good block to thwart long serving Uxbridge danger man Tunnell.

The half closed with a number of Uxbridge fouls, which eventually brought a final tally of nine cautions. Within a minute of the restart, Uxbridge took the lead.

Tunnell won the ball in the heart of the Bridgwater defence, found Howe and his spectacular cross-come-shot swerved into the net off the far post.

Bridgwater responded when Mercieca picked up a misplaced pass and his drive was turned over by Miller in the Uxbridge goal.

From their third corner of the half, Bridgwater equalised. Young heading on Pepperell’s corner for Price to force home from under the bar with 57 minutes on the clock.

Six minutes later, Bridgwater regained the lead. Young charged down the keeper’s attempted clearance. The ball fell kindly to the foot of the striker and although out near the touchline, his long-range shot sailed into the empty net – a cool finish.

Bridgwater looked for further goals through Beadle and Young but both were unable to finish.

Bridgwater withdrew Mercieca and Young with Beadle drawing the short straw to play as a lone striker.

In the last ten minutes, Uxbridge rallied and Bridgwater’s wide men could not hold onto the ball to relieve the defence, in which Laird was a tower of strength.

In stoppage time, defender Dennison, adding his weight to the attack, smashed a tremendous shot against the goal frame as Bridgwater held on to record their first away win of the season following three draws from their games on the road.

Bridgwater Town team from: Hutchings, Price, Laird, Pitcher, Orchard, Beadle, Kirk, Trowbridge, Pepperell, Young, Robertson, Mercieca, Young.
