Brean golf round-up

IT was another busy week at Brean Golf Club as the pitch and putt course opened and a full calendar of competitions and matches took place.

First into action were the seniors with the opening round of the Captain’s Cup.

Jeremy Savill’s was one of the last cards to be returned but it was worth the wait as it showed he had gone around in 83 for a superb nett 62.

This gave him a clear victory by two strokes over Wally Pape, with Barry Tucker third on 65.

In the Monthly Medal, George Thomas continued his good run of form.

He was just outside the prizes in the Captain’s Cup but his nett 68 was good enough for him to win the medal.

He beat Jim McLauchlan on a countback while the consistent Barry Tucker was third after a 69.

The 13th round of the Race to Wales was contested and, after a smaller entry due to club matches, Division Two produced the best scoring.

Tony Burrow showed his practising at the range was paying off as he carded a best of the day score of 45 stableford points.

He finished top of Division Two, with Tony Westren one behind.

Division One success went to Chris Payne on 40, with Barry Tucker again finishing in the prizes as he came second on 38.

The Avalon League B team had a home match with Minehead on the same day.

After suffering a heavy defeat in West Somerset they were out for revenge – and the match stood at 2-2 with only the final game on the course.

A loud cheer went up around the clubhouse as the news reached them that Steve Jones and Brian Read had won the match to complete a 3-2 victory for Brean over a disappointed Minehead team.

Also that day, captain Roger Vaughan took his team to Stockwood Vale to play their second-round clash with Saltford.

After a great win in the first round they suffered a heavy defeat to a strong Saltford team, whose handicap for the whole team totalled only one.

The formidable-looking team of Murray Parsons, Pete Dunn and Tony Romeo returned an excellent score of 116 to secure a three-shot victory over the 21 other teams taking part in Brean’s Open Three-ball competition.

In second were Tina Bateman, Irene Trumper and Lee Trumper on 119, while Mike Carter, Graham Foy and John Ham were third on 120.

Maybe after the event the water hazard to the left of the 6th should be renamed ‘Baters Brook’ after captain-elect Steve Bateman somehow managed to fall into the hazard and ended up with a thorough soaking from head to foot.
