Doctors lose out at Taunton

Taunton School 157 for 7 bt Bridgwater Doctors 144 all out by 13 runs.

DEBUTANT Geoff Carvelly generated good pace and bowled a good, attacking line and length.

But he was unable to prevent the school’s youthful openers M Abell and A Dibble from making a storming start with 44 from the first four overs.

The cornucopia of classy boundaries was cut off when Abell (28) lobbed a ball from Tom Eve to James Murdoch at mid-on and Dibble retired on 30 not out.

Carvelly (1-17) gained a deserved reward and for a while Eve (2-35) and Will Chandler kept the score in check by taking wickets.

The irrepressible Dave Tarr got his team back on track with an innings of improvisation and power and useful help from E Hayden.

Chandler (2-42) capped his fine spell with the wicket of Hayden (21) and was unlucky to see Tarr dropped at short fine leg.

Tarr (34no) retired and Phil Barker and Sam Powell kept the lid on the tail with tidy spells of bowling.

Graham Fergusson completed a polished display of keeping with a stumping off Barker (1-8), his third of the innings, and the final total of 157 was only just par on the perfect school batting wicket.

One classical cover drive was all that was seen of Eve as his unwise foray down the wicket to Simon Hogg presented Tarr with an easy stumping.

Chris Davenport’s fast and hostile spell of 1-13 accounted for Murdoch.

Will Chandler (14) was calmness personified until he missed a swinging full toss from Kevin Moore and then a wicket for O Curson (1-32) had Doctors struggling at 44-4.

Fergusson and John Bishop put the bowlers on the back foot with their own show of cultured strokeplay until Fergusson (13) was caught off Moore (2-43).

Carvelly joined in with some spectacular striking and when he was run out for 29 the visitors were in with a good chance.

Bishop (31) used his feet well to disrupt the bowlers’ length but scoreboard pressure eventually told as Doctors’ innings subsided in a clatter of wickets to Abell (3-10) and the returning Hogg (2-22).
